The Leuvekolk in the Port of Rotterdam is scheduled to be upgraded in the coming years. The upgrade will start on 27 February 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2020. The Leuvekolk will consist of a sunbathing area, jetty and space for canoe rental. Also, a water inlet will ensure of the supply of fresh water. The fish will be protected as a fish passage to and from the Nieuwe Maas will enable their transmit.
Specifically, there will be an inlet for fresh water from the Nieuwe Maas. The Authority will repair an existent unused pipeline, which is located under the Blaak and Plein 1940.
Moreover, the Authority supports that the salty seawater coming from the North Sea, continues up the river. The extra inlet at the Leuvekolk will open when the river supplies fresh water from the pipeline. Therefore, there will also be sufficient fresh water for agriculture, horticulture and nature along the Rotte in periods of drought.

This fish passage will make it possible for fish to swim, such as eel and the three-spiny sticklebacks, between the Rotte and the Nieuwe Maas.
In 2020, the municipality will set up a sunbathing area and jetty. This will enable people to sit near the water and moor their canoe or dinghy. An entrepreneur has shown interest in renting canoes.
Leuvekolk is one of the projects from the Rivieroevers program .
In this, the municipality of Rotterdam works together with partners to make the Rotte, Nieuwe Maas and Schie greener and livelier. The adaptation of the Leuvekolk is financed by the municipality of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Hoogheemraadschap van Schieland and the Krimpenerwaard and Rijkswaterstaat. Other places along the Rotte that are redesigned are the Left Rottekade, the Grotekerkplein and the Crooswijksebocht.
