The ITF continued its collaboration with the Government of the United Arab Emirates, during a meeting in Dubai. ITF and UAE discussed the successful cooperation on helping seafarers abandoned in UAE waters.
ITF general secretary Stephen Cotton, president Paddy Crumlin and Arab World regional secretary Bilal Malkawi met with Omar Bin Ghaleb of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and Dr. Abdullah Belheif Al Nuaimi, minister of infrastructure development and chair of the Federal Transport Authority (FTA): Land & Maritime.
During the meeting, the partners talked abandoned seafarers, discussed future work and assessed the ITF-UAE memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The ITF delegation also visited DP World; one of the world’s major port operators.
In addition, ITF General Secretary, Stephen Cotton, commented
When we signed the MOU with the UAE FTA we said this was only the beginning; there would be further cooperation that would show real results for transport workers. We are already seeing how seafarers are benefiting from this agreement, and now we are taking the first steps to expanding this work to other sectors and more workers.
Generally, ITF aims for a better workplace environment in favour of seafarers. Thus, the Federation was fully supportive of ILO’s convention on harassment in workplace.
