A wounded crew member was successfully evacuated by the Indian Navy from the MV Ruen, a vessel flying the flag of Malta. The Bulk Carrier belonged to Navigation Maritime Bulgare, a business based in Bulgaria close to the Yemeni island of Socotra, and was taken over by unknown assailants on December 14.
In response to the incident, the Indian Navy sent the guided missile destroyer INS Kochi in close proximity to the seized ship. The Navy’s mission sent out platforms, including warships and navy marine patrol planes in the Gulf of Aden, to locate and aid MV Ruen.
Just before to the hijacking, the United Nations Security Council loosened the weapons embargo on the Federal Government of Somalia, raising concerns about the need for improved maritime security.
As informed, a crew man was shot by a pirate during shooting during the incident. The Indian Navy was able to secure the wounded sailor’s release via discussions with the pirates. After that, he was sent to INS Kochi to get basic medical care. The crew member needed specialised medical treatment that the ship was unable to provide, so they were sent to a port in Oman.
