Recommendations
- As the threat of abduction of crew in the Sulu-Celebes Seas is not eliminated as was demonstrated by this incident, the ReCAAP ISC maintains its advisory issued via the ReCAAP ISC Incident Alert dated 21 November 2016 to all ships to re-route from the area, where possible.
- Otherwise, ship masters and crew are strongly urged to exercise extra vigilance while transiting the Sulu-Celebes Seas and eastern Sabah region, and report immediately to the following Centres below:
The news comes only a day after ReCAAP ISC issued its monthly report for August, reporting no crew abduction in the region. The report reveals a slight increase in attacks against ships in Asia for the January-August 2018 period, compared to the same period last year.
