The International Maritime Organization (IMO) discussed the issue of IMO Member State audits being done remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Specifically, during the uncertainty of the pandemic, IMO conducted a forum in order to inform all auditors on the impact of the disruption on the implementation of audits under the Scheme.
In addition, they discussed the use of remote audit mechanism to prevent the postponements of the audits.
The remote audits promote the consistent and effective implementation of the applicable IMO instruments and assists Member States to improve their capabilities as flag, coastal and port States.
Moreover, the IMO explained the next steps of the audits for 2021 and beyond using new collaborative approaches for the conduct of remote audits.
Overall, due to physical distancing, digital tools and solutions are more important than ever. Therefore, classification societies, PSC and more shipping organizations are opting for remote surveys and audits, with less physical presence, showing how fruitful digitalization can be.
