The GreenPort Congress 2019 will take place in Oslo, Norway from 16-18 October, focusing on zero emissions targets and responses to environmental challenges, as well as high tech green solutions and emissions measuring. The event will conclude with a technical visit onboard the MS Kongen, the first electric vessel in the Port of Oslo.
Fitted with a 26-tonne battery instead of LNG fuel, the vessel was the first to be converted to electrical operation for the Port of Oslo.
The vessel’s 2018 kWh battery system took over 25,000 hours to fit and was installed in the room where the gas tank was previously.
The ferry serves the daily local traffic between the peninsula of Nesodden and the city centre of Oslo. The vessel carried a total of 2.8 million passengers in 2018.
This comes in line with the Port of Oslo’s commitment in environmental strategies, aiming to cut emissions by 50% by 2020 (compared to 1990) and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
As ‘2019’s European Green Capital’ Oslo has taken on leadership in the green change.
In this context, the technical visit will show delegates Oslo from the sea side, showcasing the ferry terminals with equipment for onshore power supply, travelling past the new developments of the port including the harbour promenade, recreational areas, opera house, Munch museum and the residential areas.
The tour will also include a visit to the industrial part of the port providing the perfect opportunity for delegates to see first-hand how to reduce carbon footprint within all aspects of the port environment.
