Gibraltar’s Gibdock shipyard conducted an important conversion project so that the Balearia ferry Napoles can operate using LNG as a fuel. The project took three months and represents Gibraltar’s position as one of the leading, environmentally-friendly facilities in the Mediterranean.
Mainly, Napoles is 186 metres long and has a capacity of 1.600 passengers and 1.430 lane metres of cargo.
The vessel is the first amongst the five of Balearia’s, that plans to convert to dual fuel operations in order to be compliant with IMO’s sulphur regulations.
Richard Beards, Managing Director at Gibdock commented
We are delighted to have been entrusted with this project, which was the first for us and for Balearia; the experience will ensure that the Sicilia conversion goes even more smoothly.
Moreover, Napoles arrived on dock on November 15, 2018.
The majority of subsequent work was conducted alongside yard’s main repair whard, while some elements of the LNG conversion undertaken in Gibdock’s Panamax size Dock 1.
Many modifications were made on Deck 1, in order for the vessel to be able to accommodate Wartsila’s LNG fuel tank.
