According to the Government of Gibraltar, the port has suspended its port operations following a bunker fuel spill incident on 1st August.
In particular, a ship that was taking on bunker fuel from a small bunker tanker experienced an overflow, resulting in a spill.
After the incident, the Gibraltar Port Authority begin cleanup operations.
In addition, several beaches have been closed to swimming due to the risk that bunker fuel may wash up on shore.
However the port has not yet provided a timeline for the resumption of normal operations.
The Department of Environment are closely monitoring developments and lifeguards are on alert for oil on the Western shoreline. Red flags are flying at Camp Bay and Little Bay as it is expected that some oil will reach the shore in these areas. Bathers are urged to be cautious even if Yellow flags are flying.
…said the government in a statement.
The government added there have not been any sightings of any free floating streaks of oil moving away from this area.
