The French Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) signed a contract for four new Logistic Support Ships (LSS) for the French Navy, on 30 January 2019. These ships will replace the Navy supply ships currently in service. The first two units will be delivered by 2025.
The contract aims to replace the current single-hull oil tankers, with modern, double-hulled and internationally compliant vessels. The four ships will be assisting the ships deployed on high seas, such as aircraft carriers, amphibious helicopter carriers, and frigates, by supplying them with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and food.

The design of the vessels will be made according to the Italian LSS Vulcano. This is the first ship of the Italian-French Logistic Support Ship (LSS) programme managed by OCCAR. The industrial organisation of this programme aims to advance the industrial capabilities of the two countries.
OCCAR carries out various programs on behalf of France and Italy, either through bilateral cooperation or through cooperation with other countries.
The ships will be delivered between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2029.
This order comes after the signature on 23 October 2018, by the General Delegate for Armament Joel Barre and his Italian counterpart Secretary General Nicolò Falsaperna, of the Franco-Italian agreement Logistic Support Ship.
