The Port of Barcelona announced that the first vessel has connected to an LNG-fueled engine at its port. This is part of Port of Barcelona’s attempt to reduce shipping emissions in the port, by replacing the operation of the vessel’s auxiliary engines.
The adoption of LNG as a marine fuel is a focal point of the Plan of Improvement of the Air Quality of the Port of Barcelona. In this project, Port of Barcelona along with the companies of the Port Community of Barcelona are taking part, in order to achieve the goal of minimizing the emissions of ships.
Additionally, except from Plan of Improvement of the Air Quality, four more projects are currently on action, which also are based on the use of LNG as a fuel in the Port of Barcelona:
- The utilization of two straddle carrier which operate with natural gas,
- The use of gavarra to provide vessels with LNG,
- A tugboat powered with natural gas,
- The supply of gas to 26 heavy trucks.
Moreover, the Plan for the Improvement of Air Quality incorporates other actions as well, like environmental bonuses for the ship and renewal of the internal fleet of vehicles in the Port of Barcelona with electrical units.
