Russia reported on Monday, December 25th, that emergency crews successfully extinguished a fire on the Sevmorput, a Soviet-era nuclear-powered cargo-icebreaker ship docked in Murmansk.
As Reuters reports, the fire erupted in one of the cabins, covering about 30 square meters at its peak. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and Atomflot, the state company managing the vessel, reassured that there was no threat to the reactor’s security or crucial support systems.
The ship carries goods along the Northern Sea Route at the moment. There have been only four nuclear-powered commerce ships ever constructed; this one, which was launched in 1988, is the only one still in operation as of 2023.
