According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, a fire aboard a containership anchored off the coast of Port Klang was extinguished with minor damage and no casualties to the crew.
The containership KMTC Shenzhen, owned by Korea Marine Transport Co. (KMTC), was anchored at the Acheh anchorage off the coast of Malaysia. Following the vessel’s fire alarm shortly after 1 a.m. local time on August 12, two fireboats from Malaysian Maritime, as well as the local fire department and marine services agency, dispatched additional resources to the vessel.
According to reports, they used water cannons to extinguish the fire in front of the container stacks. After roughly two hours, they reported that the fire was under control and not expanding.
The total number of containers onboard the ship was 1,189, with nine reported burned. An investigation into the cause of the accident has begun.
