A fire took place onboard the X-Press Pearl on May 20 off Colombo. No injuries have been reported.
The X-Press Pearl was carrying around 25 tons of nitric acid at the time of the fire, and called for help when the fire started.
Immediately the Sri Lankan navy deployed several vessels to tackle the fire, 9.5 nautical miles from Colombo port.
In addition, Sri Lankan authorities boarded the ship, noting that the fire may have started from a reaction to the chemicals being transported on the boxship.
No injuries have been reported, while Navy ships remain stand by, dealing with the fire.
