The Greek-flagged ferry boat ‘Panaghia Tinou’ is taking on water and sinking at Piraeus Port. The 5,122-gt ferry, built 1972, has lost its stability and tugboats are currently at the port.
The ship, which was put into service in 1960 and confiscated by the state a few years ago due to outstanding debts by operator Ventouris Sea Lines, starting taking on water early on Tuesday and is listing precariously as efforts continue to pump out excess water, Piraeus Port Authority confirmed.
Two tug boats have been dispatched at the scene for assistance, while crews are trying to pump water out from the vessel.
Local media reports that the ship was docked last year due to financial problems. Specifically, the ship was briefly traveled to Kythira in January 2015, however, it was docked soon after due to debts towards the crew.
The ferry was responsible for the route from Piraeus to the popular holiday islands of Syros, its namesake Tinos and Myconos for most of its lifetime.
