The crew of a cargo ship reported a fire on board the ship “EF Ava” on October 24, inbound to Iceland.
After receiving the call, two helicopters of the Icelandic Coast Guard, the crew of a patrol ship and the sea rescue teams of the Accident Prevention Association were called out.
As the teams found out, an explosion had occurred in the ship’s engine room. Its captain told the Coast Guard command center that smoke was coming from the engine room, but no fire was visible.
The ship lost its engine after the event, but there were no casualties. There were thirteen crew onboard at the time of the incident.
The cargo ship’s crew got the situation under control soon after Coast Guard helicopters arrived, and the fire department did not have to go aboard.
As a result, it was decided to withdraw the helicopters as well as the response of rescue teams.
