The number of maritime accidents nationwide has dropped with only 40 cases reported this year compared to 85 cases in 2011, 1O2 cases in 2010 and 113 cases in 2009.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the reduction in maritime accidents reflects a positive sign in the country’s sea transport segment.
Malaysia had taken positive steps on ship safety based on recommendations of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), including adding vessel traffic system operators to control cruise ships traffic in the Straits of Melaka.
“Improved standard of service and safety guarantee in the Straits of Melaka resulted in over 70,000 vessels using it. This makes it the leading maritime communication route between East Asia and the West,” he said when launching World Maritime Day 2012 celebration at Maritime Transport Training Institute in Pulau Indah, here Thursday.
