A Hungarian court condemned Ukraine’s cruise captain to five and a half years in jail for involvement in a Danube crash in 2019 that killed 27 people.
To remind, on May 20, 2019, the Mermaid had 33 tourists from South Korea and two crew members from Hungary.
The smaller tourist boat named Mermaid, with 35 people on board, drowned after being struck by the cruiser beneath a bridge in Budapest amid heavy rain in the biggest Danube accident in more than a half-century.
According to the Budapest court judge, cruise captain, Yuri Chaplinsky, was found guilty of carelessly endangering transport that led to a mass accident. However, before the verdict, the captain had voiced immense regret for the disaster.
