A crewmember of the LR2 tanker STI Guard was seriously injured in a knife attack that took place on February 4, according to the Regional Operational Monitoring and Rescue Center (CROSS) of Reunion Island. Since the attack occurred in international waters, the vessel’s flag , Marshall Islands, has jurisdiction over the investigation and any possible charges that might follow.
Specifically, CROSS Reunion was informed for the incident at 09.35 hours local time.
According to sources, an Indian national was injured after a fight on board of the vessel. The victim was identified as the STI Guard’s commanding officer. He had two stab wounds to the upper body during the altercation.

Moreover, CROSS Reunion discussed with medical advisors at the Hospital Purpan in Toulo use, France, where the CROSS system’s medical consultation center (CCMM) is located.
They were advised to immediately evacuate the victim. However, the STI Guard was located about 300 nm out of range of CROSS Reunion’s helicopter service.
The Guard changed its course to the Reunion and a doctor from CCMM provided advice remotely so that the crew could administer care during the transit.
In addition, at 06.00 a national police helicopter from Reunion met with the STI Guard about 20 nm off the island’s coast.
As the helicopter brought a medical team in order to prepare the victim for his transmit, they evacuated at Bellepierre Hospital.
After the attack, the attacker was restrained and held on board for the voyage to Reunion.
