A 57 year old Canadian seafarer died after falling off the bulker ‘Spruceglen’, while he was tying it before entering the Eisenhower Locks on October 16. The seafarer probably lost his balance and fell.
According to local media, the seafarer was being lowered onto a dock from the side of the bulk carrier, when he lost his balance and slipped off.
A few minutes after the fall, the man was found in the water with his face down and unconscious. Two St. Lawrence Seaway employees attempted to help, but the man was later pronounced dead at Massena Memorial Hospital.
‘Spruceglen’ was heading upriver and at the time of the accident was waiting to go through the locks. Massena Fire and Rescue responded at the incident, while USCG is helping with the investigation.
According to sources, the bulker is tied up on the lower approach wall to Eisenhower Lock, waiting for the onsite investigation to end.
