A crewmember of a Singapore-flagged Capesize bulker lost his life after a gas explosion onboard the vessel on October 28, marking the challenging life of the seafarer and the fatalities that are hiding.
Specifically, according to reports, the 2014-built Cape India was transiting Makassar Strait, sailing from China to Australia, when the explosion took place.
Locals report that the injured one was of Chinese nationality.
In light of the incident, the injured seafarer was taken by a rescue boat to a hospital in Indonesia’s Balikpapan but was later declared dead.
For the time being, the cause of the explosion remains unknown and the damage that the vessel has suffered is under investigation.
During last months, similar fatal accidents have taken place.
For instance, in June, three crewmembers experienced a fatal injury after an explosion onboard a tanker’s engine room; Also, in January, due to an explosion onboard the Aframax tanker LR2 Poseidon two workers died, while 10 were in the hospital injured.
