The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) opened on 11 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, with UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, highlighting that “now it is the time to show that global cooperation is not down for the count.“
COP29, or the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is a major international climate summit scheduled for November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. This conference continues the work of previous COPs, bringing together global leaders, scientists, and activists to advance climate action, with an agenda focusing on critical issues like fossil fuel reduction, financial support for climate mitigation and adaptation.
Upon opening the Conference, Simon Stiell stressed the need for a robust global climate finance goal, noting that without it, countries would continue to suffer devastating economic and social consequences. He also called for the acceleration of clean energy investments and infrastructure, highlighting the shift towards a more sustainable economy as a crucial step.
We can’t make decisions in the dark. Biennial Transparency Reports, due this year, will give us a clearer picture of the progress we’re making, and the gaps that we need to fill. Next year, all countries will deliver their third generation of national climate plans – NDCs. To support countries in creating and communicating them, the UNFCCC will launch a Climate Plan Campaign.

Furthermore, Stiell underlined the importance of strengthening the global financial system and ensuring that all nations, including the wealthiest, contribute to climate action. He urged for progress on mitigation targets and adaptation measures, alongside mechanisms for financial and technical support for loss and damage.
To remind, Secretary-General Dominguez will share the latest developments in delivering the IMO GHG Strategy at COP 29, including those related to ongoing negotiations towards a new set of binding economic and technical ‘mid-term GHG reduction measures’ to decarbonize the maritime sector.
