The Singapore-flagged containership Rio Madeira experienced an electrical power outage on route to Sydney, Australia, on 20 October. As a result, the ship drifted along New South Wales coast, some 30 nautical miles offshore.
After drifting for two days off on the Australian coast, tug Svitzer Glenrock was assigned for repairs. Eventually, the Rio Madeira berthed at Sydney Hutchison terminal for repairs on 23 October.
According to Maersk:
The vessel had power supply from the emergency generator; however, it was not sufficient to perform all functions which were required to sail the vessel
The company also “arranged tugboats to be alongside for safety and stability of the vessel while crew members were trouble shooting the issue.”
The technicians have now rectified the issue and electricity onboard the vessel has been restored, however, the causes regarding the power outage remain unclear.
