HD Hyundai Marine Solutions has announced the deployment of its AI-based route optimization system, OceanWise, on vessels operated by SK Shipping and Hyundai Glovis.
As explained, this system uses big data and AI algorithms to calculate the most efficient maritime routes, helping to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. OceanWise is positioned as a solution to meet the growing demand for sustainable shipping practices, focusing on both decarbonization and cost-efficiency.
The system’s development began in April 2024 in partnership with HD Hyundai Oilbank. During trials conducted across 13 routes, covering over 106,000 kilometers, OceanWise achieved an average fuel-saving efficiency of 5.3%.
According to HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, for a vessel consuming 10,000 tons of fuel annually, this equates to fuel savings of about 350 million won ($290,000). To ensure the solution’s accuracy, HD Hyundai employed a “twin ship” validation method, operating two identical vessels on the same route, with captains switched between trials for added credibility.
