Ocean, and especially major rivers, are full of debris that can cause accidents
The Coast Guard is urging residents and mariners Tuesday to stay clear of beaches and stay off the water until Hurricane Sandy passes through the area and winds drop below 20 knots.
Although the immediate threat of strong winds and rain has passed, there are still a lot of hazards people can encounter on and near the water.
The ocean, and especially major rivers, will be full of debris that can cause major damage. In addition, buoys and other navigation aids may be missing or in different locations following a major storm.
Beachgoers and surfers can also be at risk, even after the storm passes, and should remain off beaches, piers, and jetties until authorized by local officials since rip currents will still be dangerous.
“There will still be real dangers on the water for the next several days,” said Capt. Kathy Moore, the captain of the port of Philadelphia. “We strongly urge people not to let their guard down and to avoid getting out on the water until it is safe to do so.”
