During IMO’s webinar ”Future of Shipping: Decarbonisation”, Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Ong Ye Kung, highlighted the climate change problem, and the need for global collaboration.
As Mr. Kung said, Singapore is keeping up with the fight against climate change, which is ”a global ambition, to be accomplished by the international maritime community.”
As he explained, everyone will feel the effects of climate change, as it is an existential threat to mankind. He acknowledged though that the world must deal with the COVID-19 crisis, but the fight against climate change is crucial.
In order to succeed in this task, the minister said that a global ambition is necessary, which should be accomplished by the international maritime community.
The IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim also took part at the event, calling for more action to speed up research into zero carbon marine fuels.
To achieve this, Mr. Lim said that IMO is stepping up its efforts to act as a global forum and promoter in R&D in zero carbon marine fuels, bringing together interested stakeholders from public and private sectors.
