According to the latest report from the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, the cargo vessel SM MONTANA was assisted by MV LEFKES and at this time is approximately 20 nm West of Little Cayman. The risk of a potential grounding in Little Cayman has been mitigated.
What happened
The Cayman Islands Coast Guard’s Operation Rescue Coordination Centre has reported on 2nd April that efforts are ongoing to coordinate response to disabled cargo ship, SC Montana, a Liberia freighter vessel that is in Cayman’s waters. As explained, all crew members on SC Montana are safe.
The vessel experienced engine malfunction and is adrift heading towards Little Cayman.
The Coast Guard has requested assistance from vessels in the vicinity, and two vessels, Aruna Cihan and LEFKES, have responded.
Additionally, a local tug is en route from Grand Cayman. Crew members aboard SC Montana have informed the Cayman Islands Coast Guard that they have generator power and have utilized all available means to slow their drift. However, the ship’s engines remain offline.
