After allegedly colliding with a wind farm on April 24th, a cargo ship made its way to Emden, Germany with a big hole in its hull.
The damaged ship, according to the German maritime police, landed in Emden on April 25, 2023, from Szczecin, Poland. 1,500 tons of grain bound for Antwerp were put onto the ship flying the flag of Antigua. It has been determined that the mentioned ship is the general cargo ship Petra L (1,685 dwt), which was constructed in 1984.
The North Sea’s Gode Wind farm’s operator, Danish Ørsted, acknowledged the incident to Offshore Energy-Green Marine, stating that a vessel collided with a wind turbine at the Gode Wind 1 offshore wind farm.
According to the police, the ship’s starboard side was severely damaged, causing a hull hole that measured 5 by 3 meters and reported water infiltration. The ship managed to arrive at a port in Germany, where damages are still being determined.
Local officials are currently looking into the incident to find out what caused the collision and whether any safety procedures were broken. Additional information is anticipated to become available in the upcoming days after the crew of the cargo ship was questioned as part of the investigation.
