On February 28th, on Vancouver Island’s Fanny Bay, a woman hanging of a dinghy was saved by the crew of a BC Ferries ship, Baynes Sound Connector.
Using a rapid response boat from the Baynes Sound Connector, the crew helped the Texada Island woman out of the water. As stated by her partner on CTV news, she fell in while trying to get into an inflatable dinghy from her 9-metre racing vessel. She was in the process of transferring things from the sailing boat to the dinghy when she slipped and fell into the cold water.
She just lost her footing I just couldn’t get her out of the water and we had the dog in this little dinghy as well.
… said her partner.
The reason why the woman couldn’t come back up on the boat, was that her partner had overlooked the safety ladder during the safety inspection, which was inoperative when he needed to rescue her. Him not deploying the ladder to check it, nearly cost the woman’s life.
When they realized that the woman couldn’t be saved without help, they contacted the authorities which in their turn notified the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. In a matter of ten minutes, two of the BC crew arrived on a rapid boat. Luckily, the woman was rescued without any complications.
