At Gastech 2024, ABS awarded approval in principle (AIP) for two autonomous technologies from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
According to ABS, one key technology is the Unmanned Ammonia Engine Room, which features a remote propulsion control station equipped with gas safety systems. This allows for unattended monitoring and automated corrective actions during machinery faults.
Complementing this is the AI Safety Package, which leverages advanced AI for machinery and safety management, integrated into HD Hyundai’s safety solutions, including rapid response fire-fighting capabilities. By minimizing crew access to the engine room, this initiative seeks to ensure safer voyages and address the growing demand for ammonia-fueled vessels.
Patrick Ryan from ABS highlighted that the collaboration with HD Hyundai represents significant progress in integrating autonomous technologies into maritime systems, emphasizing that these systems are complex and interconnected.
Meanwhile, Jaejun Jung from HD Hyundai noted that their experience with alternative fuels has led to the development of the Unmanned Engine Room concept, enhancing safety and convenience by minimizing crew access and facilitating safer voyages.
