After receiving a notification in November 2017 regarding a dangerous situation during saturation diving operations by DOF Subsea Australia, as part of the Ichthys project, Australia’s offshore regulator, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) started an investigation.
As Damien Cronin, NOPSEMA’s Investigation Manager, reports, “a total of seven complaints have been made by saturation divers in relation to injuries that they attribute to a saturation diving operation in July 2017.”
NOPSEMA followed the complaints s part of the investigation, but until today the complainants have not been in a position to assist. NOPSEMA is now conducting an investigation warrant about the incident. The companies involved have been cooperating with the investigation.

Mr. Cronin added:
Subject to the outcome of the investigation, NOPSEMA will consider whether enforcement action is appropriate, up to and including prosecution.
NOPSEMA’s independent Investigations Unit conducts the investigation, which remains ongoing and more updates will be provided in the days to come.
