Four persons armed with a gun and knives boarded a LPG carrier, on September 7, around 35 nm off Pulau Aur, Malaysia, according to IMB Piracy reporting centre.
The armed men stole crew and ship’s properties and escaped. All crewmen are reported safe, with no injuries.
The incident occurred only one day after 13 armed perpetrators boarded a Thai-flagged product tanker, 54 nm east of Kuala Dungun, West Malaysia, and stole one million litres of diesel oil. In this case, the crew managed to activate the SSAS alarm and the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) dispatched two ships and a helicopter to the location and rescued the tanker.
According to ReCAAP’s recent report, the number of incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia in August 2017 has increased slightly compared to the same period in 2016.
