AMSA Marine Notice 04/2013
AMSA has issued Marine Notice No. 4/2013 regardinge Coastal Pilotage.
This notice is to remind masters, owners and operators of the coastal pilotage requirements within the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, as specified by Marine Orders Part54 – Coastal Pilotage.
A coastal pilot is required for any vessel:
- that is 70 metres or longer in length overall;or
- that is a loaded:
-
- oil tanker;
- or chemical tanker;
- or liquefied gas carrier
Coastal pilots may be licenced for one or more of the following areas:
- Hydrographers Passage
- Inner Route
- Great North East Channel
- Whitsundays
Masters may choose to utilize a coastal pilot’s local knowledge and take their advice outside of the licenced pilotage areas. However, this does not relieve the master of the responsibility for the conduct and navigation of the ship.1
Masters or owners may apply to AMSA for coastal pilotage exemptions under the provisions of Marine Orders Part54.
