The video, published by Hamburg Port Authority, provides an insight into the port’s plans for 2019. Jens Meier, CEO of HPA, and presenter Matthias Wolk drove through the port on the “Hafenkapitän” and talked about the upcoming topics for this year.
The HPA manages around 50 ships and 40 barges for the Port of Hamburg – this year the fleet is growing to include multifunctional fire-fighting vessels with environmentally friendly hybrid propulsion.
For Hamburg port, the repair of the St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel is of priority. In spring, the Hamburg residents can use the newly renovated east tunnel for the first time.
Another important topic for 2019 is the adaptation of the fairway. This year, the fairway will be widened so that large ships can meet each other safely in oncoming traffic.
One of the most important construction projects in the Port of Hamburg is the new Kattwyk railway bridge.
Port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest universal port, handled 135.1 million tonnes of seaborne cargoes during 2018, falling 1% in comparison to 2017. Yet, the railborne seaport-hinterland transport accounted for an overall of 46.8 million tonnes, increasing by 2.7% and 2.44 million TEU, equal to 4.7%.
In late January, the Port announced that its first two straddle carriers with environmentally friendly hybrid engines are now transporting containers between the ship, the yard, the rail terminal and the truck gate at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT).
The two prototypes are expected to use at least 15% less diesel than their predecessors, significantly reducing emissions of CO2, nitric oxide and particulate matter.
