Officials have announced that the cargo vessel Tim S. Dool, which ran aground in the St. Lawrence River in late November, has been successfully refloated.
The vessel, carrying wheat grain, ran aground on November 23 while navigating U.S. waters upstream of Morrisburg, Ontario. After extensive efforts, including lightering (removing cargo to ease the vessel’s movement), the ship was refloated early Monday morning and brought to Wilson Hill, New York, for a full inspection, CTV News Ottawa reports.
The U.S. Coast Guard acknowledged the coordinated efforts of multiple local, state, federal, and international agencies in ensuring the successful refloating. While the cause of the grounding remains unconfirmed, it is known that the ship was fully grounded, which made initial refloating attempts with tugboats from Quebec City challenging. Despite the incident, the vessel did not cause disruptions to shipping traffic or environmental harm, and no injuries were reported.
The Tim S. Dool is owned by the Algoma Central Corporation, a Canadian shipping company, and services the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
