Venezuela closed its maritime border with Dutch Caribbean islands, because of the opposition’s plan to bring in humanitarian aid on February 23, in order to alleviate an economic crisis. Namely, the border is closed with the islands of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire.
According to Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, the border closure will be in place for an unknown period of time. She also added that Venezuela has not only closed its borders, but is also revising its relations with these countries.
As Reuters reports, this decision was taken after Curacao said that it would help store aid destined for Venezuela.
On the other hand, opposition leader Juan Guaido, who has been recognized by many countries as the legitimate head of state, informed that food and medicine provided partly by the US will arrive in Venezuela on February 23.
Currently, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, is blocking offers of outside aid, denying the existence of shortages and insisting that Venezuela’s economic problems were caused because of sanctions by the US.
From its part, the US has sent tons of aid to Colombia’s border with Venezuela, something that President Maduro believes is a ‘cheap show.’
