The U.S. State Department has officially designated Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
This decision highlights the threat posed by the Houthis to American civilians and personnel in the Middle East, as well as to regional partners and global maritime stability, as outlined in Executive Order 14175. Terrorist designations are seen as a crucial tool in the fight against terrorism, aiming to limit support for terrorist activities.
The U.S. also warns that it will not tolerate any country engaging with terrorist groups like the Houthis under the guise of legitimate international business.
Since 2023, the Houthis have attacked commercial vessels and U.S. service members in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Additionally, the Department’s Rewards for Justice program has announced a reward offer of up to $15 million and possible re-location for information leading to the disruption of financial mechanisms of Ansarallah.
