Yara Marine Technologies launched its new corporate accelerator program, Yara Marine X. This is a start-up competition aiming to provide a home for technology and solutions that will contribute to a greener maritime industry.

 MacGregor and Kongsberg Maritime signed an agreement according to which the former will deliver automated mooring system for the world's first autonomous container ship, Yara Birkeland. Thus, automation will enable mooring operations to be conducted with no need of human intervention and also will support effective operation of the fully electric, zero emission vessel. 

International maritime regulators expect that the establishment of safety rules for autonomous ships will be a lengthy process, despite the fact that researchers have advanced relevant technology, saying that robot ships could be a reality in the oceans in the next few years.

Yara Marine Technologies announced the successful installation of an inline hybrid scrubber system for an undisclosed customer in the ultra-large container segment, as it it the biggest ship engine ever to be successfully fitted with an inline hybrid scrubber system.

The world's first autonomous and electric container vessel is one step closer to launch, as YARA signed a deal with VARD worth NOK 250 million to build the vessel. VARD will deliver Yara Birkeland for launch in early 2020, and the vessel will gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous by 2022.

Kalmar and Yara reached an agreement in which Kalmar will deliver fully autonomous equipment, software and services for a fully digitalised container handling solution at Yara's Porsgrunn facility in Norway. All the necessary operations related to Yara Birkeland will be conducted in a fully autonomous and cost efficient manner.

Norwegian companies Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg are cooperating and have created an autonomous shipping joint venture, called "Massterly". The new company will offer services for autonomous ships, including design and development, control systems, logistics services and vessel operations. The new company will start operations from August 2018.

France's Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, stated that France plans to adopt LNG as a fuel, altering regulation and fiscal rules on amortising investments, in order to facilitate refuelling to take place at ports.
