The China Navigation Company and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment signed a MoU, aiming to address critical waste management issues in the Pacific islands. The 'Moana Taka Partnership' allows for CNCo vessels to carry containers of recyclable waste from eligible Pacific island ports, to be recycled in suitable ports in Asia Pacific.

According to the Chinese Prevention and Control of Solid Waste Pollution Law, the import of foreign solid waste into China in order to dump, store or dispose of the same is not permitted. However, if the foreign solid waste can be used as raw materials, it may be imported to China in certain cases. 

The Chinese Government has implemented stricter controls on waste importation by adding a substantial number of solid waste types to the list of banned wastes which cannot be imported into China without a license, the London P&I Club said citing Chinese correspondents Huatai Insurance Agency & Consultant Service Ltd.

The new proposal aims to achieve a higher level of protection of the marine environment and introduces measures to prevent marine litter. It also wants to ensure that there is the necessary port reception facilities available, to promote a waste notification from ships and transparency of the waste delivery fee charging structures. 

This project aims to contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the Suez Canal and Egyptian ports by providing a collection and waste treatment service of the highest international standards, as well as providing ship owners with essential traceability on their hydrocarbon waste.

European ports believe that any proposals leading to better enforcement of the obligation for ships to deliver waste at shore are welcome. The compliance of specific elements of the Directive with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships gains ESPO’s support.

A major change is the proposal for a 100% indirect fee system for waste delivery. This means that all ships pay for the total cost of waste delivery in ports, regardless of whether they deliver any waste, which is considered very important to discourage waste dumping at sea.

SQE MARINE consulting company issued a circular reminding that the amendments to MARPOL Annex V, adopted at IMO MEPC 70 last October, concerning substances that are harmful to the marine environment and form of Garbage Record Book, are entering into force on 1st March 2018.

Four ports in southern Norway are now using a new, Norwegian-developed technology to collect waste from the water surface, as the country's ports suffer increasing littering that impacts water quality. The new waste collector, dubbed PortBin Fixed, is an automated waste collector for use in ports' "trash coves".

Port of Rotterdam cited a series of objectives and initiatives to achieve sustainability until 2050. The initiatives are related to Paris Agreement signing, promotion of LNG as a marine fuel, heat alliance, waste recycling, among others.
