Wärtsilä and Shell sign co-operative agreement to promote use of LNG as a marine fuel

The agreement will focus first on supplies from the US Gulf Coast, and then later expand Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions provider, and Shell Oil Company have signed a Joint Co-operation Agreement aimed at promoting and accelerating the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The agreement was signed in August 2011 and will run for several years.Supplies of low cost, low emissions LNG fuel will be made available to Wärtsilä natural gas powered vessel operators, and other customers by Shell. The Joint Cooperation Agreement will focus first on supplies from the US Gulf Coast, and then later expand their efforts to cover a broader geographical range.Gas fuelled marine engines are seen as being a logical means for ship owners and operators to comply with increasingly stringent environmental legislation. This agreement aims at increasing and easing the availability of natural gas for marine engine use, as well as developing the supply chain and infrastructure to facilitate the bunkering of LNG fuel. Wärtsilä to supply main engines for 25 new Russian tankers

Being built for Volga Shipping Co Wärtsilä, the marine industrys leading systems integrator, has been awarded the contract to supply the main engines for a series of 25 tankers being built for Volga Shipping Co., Russias oldest shipping company.Fifteen of the ships are to be constructed at the Okskaya yard in Navashino for ship owner Volga Flot Tanker, and the other ten at the Krasnoe Sormovo yard in Nizhny Novgorod, five for Bash Volga Tanker and five for Volgotrans. All these three ship owners are part of Volga Shipping Co.The scope of the supply includes two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 main engines to be supplied for each vessel. Delivery of the machinery will commence in the autumn 2011, and should be completed by mid 2013. The first vessel is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2012.We have previously supplied Volga Shipping with Wärtsilä engines, and have established a constructive relationship with the company over the years. Wärtsilä committed and ready to meet exhaust gas scrubber demand

Cooperation in developing and delivering exhaust gas scrubber systems Wärtsilä Corporation and Metso Corporation have signed an agreement to cooperate in developing and delivering exhaust gas scrubber systems for marine applications.Metso is to supply the scrubber units, while Wärtsilä is responsible for world-wide sales and integration of complete, certified, documented marine scrubber systems, including automation, water treatment, and ancillaries.Both Wärtsilä and Metso have extensive experience in the use of scrubber technology for land-based installations and for a number of years have worked togetheroin the development of scrubber technology. In 2005 the two companies, together with other companies in the Finnish maritime cluster, embarked on a program to develop a feasible marine scrubber.By fall 2007, the project had reached the stage of being ready for a test installation. A tanker, the MT Suula owned by the Neste Shipping division of the Finnish company, Neste Oil Oyj, was made available and the project-testing phase began in November 2008. Wärtsilä to supply the ship design and equipment for next generation Platform Supply Vessel

It will be one of the most cost and fuel-efficient vessels Wärtsilä, the marine industrys leading solutions provider and system integrator, has been awarded the contract to supply the design and equipment for a new Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) for offshore operations. The order has been placed by Hellesøy Verft AS, the Norwegian shipyard that will build the vessel, which is to be owned and operated by Norwegian ship owner, Vestland Offshore. Wärtsilä extends engine portfolio with 62- and 72-bore electronically controlled low speed engines

Electronic low speed engines added Wärtsilä has increased its offering in the mid-size, low-speed engine sector by adding new 62- and 72-bore low-speed engines with electronic control to its portfolio.The new range is designed to offer high propulsion efficiency, reliability, and optimised total cost of ownership for customers in the bulker, tanker, and feeder container markets. Both engines employ Wärtsilä's standardised low-speed technology, and incorporate electronically-controlled fuel supply and control.The 620mm-bore engine has four to eight cylinders, each with an output of 2,660kW at 97-103rpm. The 720mm version will also be produced with four to eight cylinders, each with an output of 3,610kW at 84-89rpm.The stroke/bore ratio was chosen for good internal efficiency with a gain of 1%-2% compared to current engines, and depending on the vessel type, the lower engine speeds make it possible to improve propulsion efficiency by 2%-6%.As with the 82-bore engine family, the layout fields of both new engines are extended to maintain output, while allowing an increased shaft speed.
