Speaking at the International Energy Agency Clean Energy Transition Summit, the United Nations secretary-general António Guterres suggested that any bailout to the shipping industry should be in line with the Paris Agreement commitments.

The UN secretary general called on all countries to formally designate seafarers and other marine personnel as key workers, to ensure safe crew changes and release the 200,000 seafarers who remain onboard with extended contracts. 

A new Global Industry Alliance (GIA), launched on the occasion of World Environment Day, brings together stakeholders in the private sector and the GloFouling Partnerships, a project led by UN, to address invasive species and GHG emissions.
