Requirements for companies offering GMDSS Shore-Based Maintenance service

Maritime Administrations are responsible of making sure that companies offering a GMDSS Shore-Based Maintenance (SBM) service are acceptable according to the IMO Resolution A.702 (17). If a ship owner has chosen the radio equipment to be maintained through a Shore-Based Maintenance Agreement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed with a series of requirements that must be met by a company that seeks registration as a SBM provider.

UK MCA: 2nd GPS Week Number Rollover to take place in April

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency informed operators that use GPS for both position and UTC, that the GPS Week Number will be rolling over for the second time, on April 6th, 2019. This could lead stand-alone GPS receivers and systems using GPS chips, to produce data that is 19.7 years either in the past or future, thus generating errors in both the GPS position and time.

UK MCA publishes notice on transport of dangerous goods and marine pollutants

The UK MCA published a Merchant Shipping Notice regarding the transport of dangerous goods and marine pollutants in packaged form by sea on ships within UK waters and on UK ships. The amendment 39-18 to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code will enter into force globally on 1 January 2019, with a twelve month "transitional period" until 31 December 2019.
