A new paper published by Sotiria Lagouvardou and Prof. Harilaos N. Psaraftis, Technical University of Denmark, examines the impacts of the inclusion of the maritime sector in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Petrobras completed its first transhipment operation in a non-owned terminal, at the Açu Petróleo Petroleum Terminal (T-OIL) located in the Açu Port Complex in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The transshipment operation was conducted between May 24 to 25, by a suezmax class vessel, with the mooring of the vessels Henrique Dias (exporter) and Brazil 2014 (reliever). 

The Ministry of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East, Russian natural gas major Novatek, and the Government of the Kamchatka Territory signed an agreement of intent on implementing a project for the construction of a marine LNG transshipment complex in the territory of Kamchatka. 

In a bid to protect the Great Barrier Reef and the tens of thousands of jobs that rely on the Reef, Australia's Palaszczuk Government has announced a new policy prohibiting the transshipping within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Transshipment in the North Sea Canal Area at the seaports Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad declined to 49.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2018, a decrease of 5.1%, while the Port of Amsterdam saw transshipment fall by 4.8% to 40.2 million tonnes.

Europe Beyond Coal groups and other NGOs, including Greenpeace and German Watch, have called on the Mayor of Rotterdam, Mr. Ahmed Aboutaleb; the CEO of Rotterdam Port, Mr. Allard Castelein; and the Rotterdam City Council, to phase-out coal transshipments, to mark the end of coal use in Europe.

Trina Oldendorff transhiped 25,000 mt of coal into the M/V Spar Rigel for transport to the Indian port of Haldia, where there is a maximum draft restriction of about 7.5 metres. The Trina Oldendorff then proceeded to discharge part of the remaining cargo in India.

Effective from 1 January 2018, the import and export handling tariff for non-transshipment containers at the Port of Shanghai will be lowered by 19.4% to RMB480 per 20-foot equivalent unit. Moody’s expects this move to negatively impact profitability and cash flow generation capability.

Busan, the largest transshipment port in Northeast Asia, must utilize technology and adopt innovative ship financing business as well as increasing exchanges with neighboring cities in order to be further developed, industry leaders and experts emphasize.

The Port of Gdansk Authority announced that the 1st half of 2017 was a record in terms of transshipments, achieving a value several percent higher than in the same period of 2016. The increase was noted in fuels and general cargo, particularly containers and ro-ro type cargo.
