In its Monthly Safety Scenario, the Swedish Club presents a case of ship grounding, discussing what can happen when someone communicates in a language that is not understood by everybody onboard. A pilot was communicating on the VHF with the VTS in Spanish and he did not clarify for the Master what he had said.

The ports of Aden, Mukalla, Nishtun, Hodeidah and Saleef and the Rudhum and Ash Shihr oil exporting terminals are currently open and operating as normal with no security issues. The port of Mokha, Balhaf LNG Terminal, Ras Isa Marine Terminal and Ras Isa Petroleum Products Reception Facility are closed.

When the master noticed that the vessel was in very close to the berthed vessel, he ordered full power to starboard on the bow thruster. Despite the master’s efforts to turn the bow to starboard, the vessel continued turning to port and the bow made contact with the berthed vessel.

In its Monthly Safety Scenario for July, the Swedish Club describes a case of an oil spill during a vessel's bunkering operations. Following investigation, the Club recommended that all involved parties should be informed when tanks are switched and that crew should always ensure the valves are completely shut and working.

The Swedish P&I Club issued an alert informing that military confrontations have eased in the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, pending a political deal that would bring the rebels out of the city and hand over the port to a neutral UN-controlled body. The port of Hodeidah is open and operational. 

The Swedish Club suggests vessel operators to always look to the long term, when deciding what type of engines to install across the fleet. Latest statistics from the Club show that vessels propelled by medium/high speed engines have a claims frequency 2.5 times higher than slow speed engines, with an average claims cost close to $650,000.

The Swedish Club provided an update regarding Hodeidah Airport. The Club informed that heavy fighting is currently taking place in and around Hodeidah airport, south of the city, between local forces backed the Saudi Led Coalition and the Houthi rebels. In spite of this situation, the port of Hodeidah remains open and operational.

In its latest Safety Scenario, the Swedish Club presents an accident where a stevedore lost his life after falling from a ladder. The stevedore was climbing up the ladder using only one hand as he had a tea cup in the other, which could not fit in his boiler suit pocket, and he was not wearing a safety harness as well.

The General Data Protection Regulation is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy. Ahead of the GDPR that is about to come into effect, the Swedish Club advises operators on how to try and reduce the risk of a breach.
