Microsoft is working at the second phase of its moonshot to develop self-sufficient underwater datacenters, that can deliver lightning-quick cloud services to coastal cities. An experimental, shipping-container-size prototype is currently processing workloads on the seafloor near Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

Addressing the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service annual conference, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a £4.9 million funding to Baker Hughes, a GE company, for construction of a subsea manufacturing campus off the country's north east, in support of the global oil and gas industry.

Speaking at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness Cumbria, the home of British submarine construction, the UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced £960 million worth of contracts have been signed to ramp up the next phase of construction for the UK’s four nuclear-armed Dreadnought submarines.

UK-based University of Aberdeen, WFS Technologies, and OGIC launched a joint technology project to design and construct the world’s first ExtremeEdge OLM (On-line Monitoring) system for offshore subsea and platform structures. The cooperation seeks to deliver the first generation of real time fatigue monitoring system driven by AI.

Aker Solutions announced that it will deliver a subsea production system, which includes two manifolds and nine trees for the Troll development in the North Sea. The system for Askeladd in the Barents Sea will be comprised of two manifolds and four trees.

In a bid to reduce undue burden on energy industry, while maintaining safety and environmental protection, the US BSEE completed a comprehensive review of the Production Safety Systems regulations for the US oil and gas sector, introduced after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. 

China Merchants Industry Holdings, a fully owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based China Merchants Group, will construct the largest LNG-fueled semi-submersible crane vessel in the world for Holding OOS International Group B.V. The basic design is already in progress.

Russia is planned to produce subsea production systems prototypes in 2019 and conduct comprehensive tests in 2020. At the time, domestic subsea production systems are being developed under an order from the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade with the support of Gazprom.

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, announced it has signed an order for the fabrication, engineering and project management of a complete subsea mooring and riser system, to be used in Summit's floating storage and regasification unit. The project will be ready for operation in 2019.

The project is funded by Shell Brazil and is a partnership with UFRJ-COPPE EMBRAPII. The primary goal is to extend the safe operational life of flexible risers and to reduce operational risk and increase the life expectancy of flexible risers.
