Seven crew members from the Stena Impero tanker have been released and are now travelling to a safe location where they will be reunited with their families, almost seven weeks after the ship was detained by Iranian forces, the owner Stena Bulk informed in a latest update. 

According to Stena Bulk, Iran will release seven of the 23 crew members of the Stena Impero that are held. However, the company has not yet received official confirmation of the release date. The rest of the crew will remain on board in order to safely operate the vessel.

As Stena Impero is still under Iranian detention for the 34th day, Stena Bulk’s president and CEO, Erik Hanell discussed in Stockholm on August 21, with the Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. During the talks, Mr. Hanell gave emphasis on the importance of the release of the 23 crew members.

19 days after the seizure of the British-flagged tanker 'Stena Impero' by Iranian authorities at the Strait of Hormuz, the vessel still remains detained along with its 23 crew members, which is "unacceptable and unjustifiable", said the owner Tuesday. 

Stena Bulk and Northern Marine Management released an announcement demanding to be granted access to the vessel 'Stena Impero' to conduct a full assessment. However, they are still waiting for a response from Iranian authorities. They also stated that there is no current evidence the ship has breached any maritime rules or regulations, and they supported 'the professionalism and conduct of the crew of the Stena Impero.'

There is no evidence that the 'Stena Impero' has breached any maritime rules or regulations, said the owner company Stena Bulk in its latest update, 10 days after Iranian authorities seized the British-flagged oil tanker, while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. 

Stena Bulk confirms that they communicated with the crew of the Iranian-seized Stena Impero. This follows the company's decision on asking permission from the Iranian authorities to visit the crew members. 

Iran released a video of the Iranian flag flying from the seized British-flagged tanker Stena Impero. The Stena Impero was seized on Friday, July 19, reportedly because it was breaching international maritime law. In the meantime, the UK seized an Iranian-flagged vessel, Grace 1, for illegally shipping oil to Syria, against US sanctions.

The President and Chief Executive of Stena Bulk, Erik Hanell, asked permission from the Iranian authorities to visit the crew members of the Stena Impero, which was seized by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, 19 July.

Swedish tanker owner Stena Bulk announced it has made a major investment in scrubbers and will have 16 units installed before January 2020, on a total of 10 IMOIIMAXes, 5 Suezmaxes and one of standard MR. The move is part of the company's plans to comply with the 2020 sulphur cap.
