Sanette Robinson became the first female marine pilot to receive an open licence at the Port of Cape Town. Robinson began her career in 1995 in the South African Navy, serving as a combat officer. Ms. Robinson is trained and certified to guide anything from the very smallest vessels to tankers, as well as container ships into port.

Maersk announced its plans on offering digital trade finance in South Africa, in light of further boosting small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Although they contribute to S. Africa's economy, SMEs often face challenges in accessing finance. 

The South African National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported of a Filipino seafarer that was medivaced off a bulk carrier suffering a dislocated shoulder. The rescue operation took place on Saturday, May 4 in Table Bay, off Cape Town. The patient was brought to its sea rescue station before being transported to hospital for further care.

Norden, Danish shipping company, is expanding operations to Africa where it plans to open an office by the end of the year. The new location in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, will be the company’s eleventh office, joining those already established in the US, Brazil, Australia, China, Singapore and India.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) reassured that contingency plans are in place to prevent disruptions to fuel supplies during a scheduled five-week shutdown of the tanker berth in the Port Elizabeth harbour from 18 February until 25 March. The berth outage will enable repairs to be continued on the corroded steel structures supporting the berth’s access walkway.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) confirmed the sinking of a fishing vessel off the west coast of the Western Cape near Saldahna Bay and the rescue of its 10 member crew on February 16. On the morning of the same day a good samaritan vessel rescued the crewmembers of the stricken fishing vessel.
