An International Conference on Regional Cooperation for the Protection of the Marine Environment, organised by the Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore (NUS), discussed cooperative efforts by regional bodies and platforms, and ways to improve the state of the marine environment in the region.

Singapore is one of the top bunkering ports in the world, providing high quality services which meet the requirements of the large number of vessels it serves daily; however, there are some challenging issues that operators should be aware of when it comes to bunkering, derived from frequent incidents which occurred in the past.

Asean member states must continue working to establish a single shipping market, Calvin Phua, deputy secretary of hub strategy at Singapore's Ministry of Transport, highlighted. This will enable the free flow of Asean shipping services, which will drive the economic growth in the region. This will in turn lead to more trade and investment, as well as more economic opportunities for Asean.

ReCAAP ISC published its weekly report concerning two piracy incidents that took place between 27 of February to 4 March in Straits of Malacca, Singapore and in the Gulf of Guinea. In both incidents the crew was not reported to be injured.

Busan Port Authority highlighted that its regular container cargo services increased five times to 268 during February 2018. The figure was based on the database q-from the global analysing institute, Alphaliner. In 2015 the number of its weekly cargo services was 257, in 2016 was 268, whereas it declined in 2017 in 253 because of the bankruptcy in Hanjin Shipping.

Singapore will begin a pilot project during 2019 to shift paper-based bills of lading into electronic ones. This measure aims to reduce delays when container ships dock and unload in the country. In order for the e-bills of lading to keep up with international standards, changes will also be made to the Electronic Transactions Act. The pilot will be called TradeTrust and was announced on March 4.

On March 2, the Singapore-flagged ferry 'Wavemaster 5' ran aground at Karang Galang reef, off the eastern coast of Batam, Indonesia. The ferry was voyaging from Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, Singapore, when the incident occurred.

Sinopec’s subsidiary refinery in Singapore's province of Hainan delivered its first shipment of low-sulphur bunker fuel, complying withe upcoming IMO 2020 sulphur cap regulation. Namely, a ship with 2,200 tonnes of low-sulphur fuel departed the Hainan refinery in late February heading to Ningbo on the east coast. The fuel will be put to pilot use at a maritime institution in Shanghai.

Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd has completed modifications to its Secondary Jetty at its Terminal on Jurong Island, and it is now capable of receiving and reloading small LNG ships of between 2,000m3 and 10,000m3 in capacity. The new Small-Scale LNG Facility was completed on 13 February 2019, and will help boost the development of the small-scale LNG market in various forms.

During a joint operation on 19 February 2019, with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the PCG arrested six crew members of a craft belonging to a marine service provider and another five crew members of a foreign-registered tugboat for illegal transaction of MGO at the sea off Jurong Island. The 11 men will be charged for criminal breaches.
