Carnival Cruise Line announced that Netherlands-based Boskalis will deploy a transport vessel as a first of its kind 'floating dry dock' facility to complete the repairs to Carnival Vista’s two azipods, the ship’s main propulsion system.

The Motorship Propulsion & Future Fuels 2018 conference was launched on November 14, focusing on fuels and propulsion technologies. The conference highlighted what needs to be done in order to meet the 2020 global sulphur cap goals, as well as IMO’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada released its investigation report into the collision of the dredger FRPD 309 with the loaded barge Evco 60, on 5 December 2017, in the Fraser River, after it lost its propulsion due to a blackout. The study was carried out in response to the increase in oil EAL lubricated sterntube bearing failures.

The two-year old LNG carrier 'CESI Gladstone' will resume it route to China within this week, after it suffered loss of propulsion while underway from Australia on 22 June. The ship had just loaded a cargo at the Australia Pacific LNG plant, when it sustained a main engine outage resulting in a loss of propulsion,

The ATSB issued a report on the loss of propulsion on the cruise ship 'Norwegian Star' in February 2017. The ship was operating only with the starboard propulsor. The report revealed that the processes for monitoring the condition of the brushless exciter units’ electrical insulation were ineffective in detecting deterioration prior to unit failure.

The all-electric catamaran "Future of the Fjords" has been delivered from Brødrene Aa to the owner and operator The Fjords. Future of the Fjords will make around 700 yearly round trips along the UNESCO World Heritage listed fjord route between Flåm and Gudvangen. The boat will be powered by two electric engines.

Up until now, ships have been sailing using fuels. These may have been diesel, or even LNG, which is increasing. However, there is a new trend in ships’ propulsion. That is no other than electricity.

Since early April this year, issues beyond propulsion including significant reduction of firefighting water supply and deck water spray systems have been encountered during vessel examinations and have raised concern for these critical systems while moored in the port, the USCG informed.
