The Technical University of Denmark announced that, in cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo, a young DTU researcher develops new software, which makes it possible to limit emissions of NOx particles and black smoke. The invention will be implemented in new marine engines from the end of 2017.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the launch of a grant funding, aiming to modernize the US’s diesel fleet by retrofitting or replacing vehicles with cleaner, more efficient diesel engines. The Diesel Emission Reduction Program foresees the award of at least $11 million grant to eligible applicants.

Doosan Infracore signed a memorandum of understanding on their cooperation for the development of LNG engines for small vessels with KOGAS and Samjin Yard. This MOU was concluded with a recent increase in demand for converting small domestic ships with diesel engines to LNG-powered ships.

Further research has led to new possibilities for this engine leading to new prospects for multi-fuel combustion including the combustion of waste gas.

Gas natural Fenosa and Baleària officially launched Spain’s first natural gas engine for passenger boats, in the Port of Barcelona. Both companies have fostered the development and installation of the auxiliary engine and a 30 m3 tank of LNG on the ferry Abel Matutes, which consumes natural gas in its manoeuvres and for its electricity production while it is docked, instead of its usual fuel.

MOL announced the completion, on February 10, of this year's Project Based Learning program at the University of Tokyo. MOL provided the theme "Application of bio fuels for diesel engines on ocean shipping vessels" and support throughout the process of defining and solving tasks in research conducted by the students.
