Nine EU Member States have asked the European Commission for permission to pollute above national limits set in EU law. The requests are criticised in a letter sent to EU Commission from the European Environmental Bureau, ClientEarth, Transport & Environment, AirClim and the Health and Environment Alliance.

The Port of Long Beach, in partnership with the Port of Los Angeles, has released a request for proposals seeking demonstrations of technologies to upgrade tugboats, crew boats, barges and other harbor craft to cleaner engines.

The fishermen in Malaga, who are actively involved in developing the local FLAG’s strategy, had identified two key concerns linked with artisanal fishing: high fuel consumption and low energy efficiency of their boats. To address these challenges, FLAG initiated a project to research fuel saving techniques and gas emission reductions.

The Port of London Authority is working with the Mayor of London and Transport for London on new research to help it develop an Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames. The project involves shore side power, emissions from vessels during trips and an inventory of all emissions from vessels on the river. 

The first vessel operating with the IMO Tier III Engine International Air Pollution Prevention certified Wärtsilä diesel engines was launched on July 12, Wärtsilä informed. Wärtsilä’s NOR system enables vessels to be compliant with global NOx emission control area regulations and boosts overall performance of the engine.

MOL announced intent to install the "ClassNK CMAXS", a next-generation engine status monitoring system developed by ClassNK, on two newbuilding vessels. The system utilizes sensor data acquired from data logger and VDR to offer diagnoses of onboard machinery and equipment.

Hyundai Heavy Industries, Saudi Aramco and Dussur - the Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Company - announced the signing of a MoU, to jointly collaborate on engines and pumps business development, in Saudi Arabia. The MoU foresees an engine and pump business cooperation framework, through the formation of a joint venture.

ABB announced that its turbochargers are powering the main engines and auxiliary engines of the largest containership ever built in China, a 20,000 TEU vessel named COSCO Shipping Taurus, launched in June 2017. A further ten vessels also for COSCO Shipping Lines will be applied with the same ABB turbocharger configuration.

Wartsila announced that it will equip a power plant in Lhokseumawe, Indonesia, with 13 50SG engines, operating on natural gas and providing an output of approximately 240 MW. The national utility of Indonesia appointed PT WIKA and TSK Electronica Y Electricidad, to deliver the plant. Wärtsilä will also supply TSK with gensets and performance equipment.

At a seminar held by Kaiji Press, in Tokyo, Japan Engine Corporation announced that it leads developing and manufacturing MGO mono-fuel engine, that meets all the requirement against regulations of NOx, SOx, EEDI, super low fuel consumption, extended maintenance interval and improved reliability.
